Contrary to what the name implies, Top Junk’s music is far from trash.

The dance-punk music trio is among the most talented and most refreshing new bands in the local indie music scene. It was recently featured in Pulp magazine, and the writer expressed optimism over them: “Don’t mistake dance-punk trio Top Junk for a joke band just because their singer is a popular actress and comedian.”

When I saw them perform at Lunduyan ng Sining’s season-ender Lemonites (short for Lesbian Monday Nights), it was clear this is a band to watch out for. The music was great, and the band’s set felt like an art performance, complete with mood lights and hypnotizing synths.  In between songs, singer Tuesday (or should I say Marizel) effortlessly threw  jokes at us and did parodies of Lady Gaga. We were howling with laughter!

Apparently the laughter doesn’t end with their performance, thanks to Google Translate. Out of curiosity, I looked up the lyrics of their single Kapit Mahal (Hold on, love) and had a good laugh at its ridiculous English translation. Surely we can’t expect online translation site to do the job well but for me, interchanging kapit (hold or grab) with kapit-bahay (neighbor, literally means next house) is just a bit too much!

See for your yourself.  Below is the chorus of the song:

Kapit Mahal

by Top Junk

Kapit sa dibdib, mahal
Kapit sa bibig, mahal
Kapit sa dibdib, mahal
Kapit sa bibig, kapit sa dibdib, mahal

Neighbor in the chest, dear
Neighbor in the mouth, dear
Neighbor in the chest, dear
Neighbor in the mouth, neighbor in the chest, dear

Neighbor in the chest, neighbor in the mouth. Perfect imagery, eh?
